I applied online. I interviewed at Automattic in Apr 2021
Interview
Zoom call with no video asking basic questions about work history followed by a coding test. Communication during the coding test was a bit off-putting as the interviewer went to bed when I woke up so if I had any questions I had to wait 24 hours for a response.
The coding test wasn't a challenge. However, there was a task in the coding test that they docked me for after claiming I didn't complete it - when you look at the task, they didn't ask you to complete it; they asked you to explain how to resolve it. So basically I got docked for understanding the task.
I apparently also "repurposed an exploit" that they expected me to resolve, I reviewed my code multiple times and verified with another developer that there were no security vulnerabilities in my final submission and resolved the ones for the challenge. No clue what they were looking for there. I asked if they'd be so kind to explain but I have to wait 24 hours for a response.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone was very nice to talk to. It was just extremely disappointing to wake up to their decision not to move forward after putting 16 hours of work in to code and then being graded on expectations not outlined clearly in the tasks.
I'm a huge Automattic fan but I don't know if I would apply again. This experience was very discouraging.
