Supportive environment undermined by political interference and censorship - Director Texas Tech University Employee Review

Pros

Beautiful campus, good benefits, caring people who want students to succeed and be supported

Cons

State appointed officials and new leadership have politicized how students can be supported-no support programs for LGBTQIA, or for African American students, for example. Now they are even censoring course content while providing little to no guidance to faculty on details of the censorship. This is causing a culture of fear and demoralization among those who believe in supporting students in all their identities and who believe in academic freedom and the idea that students-not politicians- should be able to choose what they want to learn in college.

Pros

Great students who are engaged and open to new perspectives.

Cons

New chancellor, Brandon Creighton, has severely limited what can be taught in all classrooms about sex/gender, race, and sexuality. All syllabi have to be approved by Dean, vice provosts, provost, president, and board of regents. Classes have been canceled and many professors have been asked to remove content from their syllabi. Students, particularly grad students, are concerned about how this will impact their ability to be hired in the future since employers will know they lack this knowledge.
